Wreckless Service

For I was hungry
And you gave Me something to eat;
I was thirsty
And you gave Me something to drink;
I was a stranger
And you invited Me in;
And you clothed Me;
I was sick
And you visited Me;
I was in prison
And you came to me.
-Matthew 25:34-35

It always surprises me when some of those who say they belong to the Lord are astonished by the service of other saints, as if they had done some extraordinary thing. I am talking about the simple service of just meeting another’s need – feeding them, giving them water, opening their home to a stranger in need, giving them clothing, visiting them in their distress. If this type of service is viewed as belonging only to those who are ‘gifted’ in those areas, there are going to be lot fewer ‘saints’ ‘inheriting the kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world’ (Matt 25:34), as one’s service record appears to be the first thing that is checked at the judgment.

True service is the submission of self in service to those in need. Sometimes that service will be as simple as giving water to drink, other times it may mean the wreckless service of laying down of one’s life so that another can live. In any event, our walk is all about service, service, service. It doesn’t matter whether or not you feel ‘gifted’ in this area, this is the area all those who follow the Lord are called to serve. The only thing you need to serve another is humility.

The Lord is coming!
