Then they will see
‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’
With great power and glory.
Then he will send out the angels
And gather his elect from the four winds
From the ends of the earth
To the ends of heaven.
Since the advent of modern science, heaven is a lot bigger than it used to be. It is no longer viewed as just that which is above us but is considered as all that surrounds us and stretches through time and distance right back to the supposed ‘big bang’. So what is indicated in Mark is that at the coming of the Lord, some of ‘his elect’ will be out-and-about in the heavens.
The first manned mission to Mars is anticipated as launching in 2025, and over 200,000 people have applied to be on board that one-way-only flight to start the colonization of the planet. Mars is not exactly ‘to the ends of heaven’ but it is in ‘the heavens’. Perhaps we will establish more colonies on other planets, or perhaps there are already established colonies out there from which the angels will ‘gather his elect’? In any event, we are coming up to those days – the heavens provide the proof that the Lord is near!
The Lord is coming!
