Finally, be strong in the Lord
And in his mighty power.
Put on the full armor of God
So that you can take your stand
Against the devil’s schemes.
For our struggle
Is not against flesh and blood
But against the rulers
Against the authorities
Against the powers
Of this dark world
And against the spiritual forces
Of evil
In the heavenly realms.
-Ephesians 6:10-12

Many believers view this section of Ephesians as just Paul’s point of view of the world in his day. The difficulty they have in believing that they are fighting against “spiritual forces” when they pray can be linked somewhat to the 21st century messages they have absorbed into their daily thinking and living. The messages that contradict the Word are that humans are to blame for the state of the world – from the changing eco-system to the scandal and corruption of political, corporate and financial institutions – and that ‘science’ is the cure for all our earthly ills (after all, it can ‘scientifically’ explain the origins of everything and given enough time it can recreate whatever it wants – from eco-systems to humans).

While many who believe in God acknowledge problems and the role humans play in them, they feign belief in the “devil’s schemes” – which are all geared toward halting the progress of the Kingdom of God on earth by any means possible – as the driving force behind the problems. Humans are the conduits by which the Kingdom of God is being assaulted and the earth is being destroyed. It appears that ‘evil’ triumphs – “Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil” (John 3:17).

Humans are also the conduits by which real change in the state of the world and progress of the Kingdom of God on earth can be achieved. The means of change is prayer:

Stand firm then
With the belt of truth
Buckled around your waist
Wit the breastplate of righteousness in place
And with your feet fitted with the readiness
That comes from the gospel of peace.
In addition to all this
Take up the shield of faith
With which you can extinguish
All the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation
And the sword of the Spirit
Which is the world of God.
And pray in the Spirit
On all occasions
With all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind
Be alert
And always keep on praying
For all the saints.
-Ephesians 6:14-18

Prayer is the manifestation of belief in God – that He is, that He acts, and that it is His light that can penetrate “this dark world”. Be conduits for the manifestation of His glory, honour and power – pray.

The Lord is coming!
