The Day of Reckoning

Many will say to me
On that day
‘Lord, Lord,
Did we not prophesy in your name
And in your name
Drive out demons
And perform many miracles?’
Then I will tell them plainly
‘I never knew you.
Away from me
You evildoers!’
-Matthew 7:22

“On that day” – leads easily to the question, which day? Most interpreters see this ‘day’ as the Day of Judgment, a time to come but not yet here. However, it is interesting that following on from this Yeshua says,

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine
And puts them into practice
Is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
The rain came down
The streams rose
And the winds blew and beat against that house
Yet it did not fall
Because it had its foundation on the rock.
But everyone who hears these words of mine
And does not put them into practice
Is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
The rain came down
The streams rose
And the winds blew and beat against that house
And it fell with a great crash.
-Matthew 7:24-27

Just after saying these things, Yeshua came down from the mountainside where He had been teaching, and two very significant things happened: a Jew with leprosy asked Yeshua to heal him because he knew He could; and a Gentile Centurion asked Him to heal his servant – “But just say the word, and my servant will be healed” – because he knew He could. These two people put ‘faith’ in Yeshua ‘into practice’ and believed He would do what He said He could and would do for those who believed in Him, trusted in Him, and acknowledged Him as One in Authority. ‘On that day’ two people put into practice that which they had heard (although the Centurion was in Capernaum and may not have heard Yeshua teaching, he certainly put into practice what he must have heard Yeshua could do, by coming to Him).

No doubt there will be ‘The Day of Reckoning’ but “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts” (Psalm 95:7-11) – “See to it . . . that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12). Those whom the Lord will turn away, that had used His Name, with all its authority and power, are those who claimed credit for what they had done in His name – not what He had done for them.

Today, is a Day of Reckoning. Stop bandying about ‘The Name’. Turn, put into practice what you have heard, and call on the Lord.

The Lord is coming!
