Social and Economic Status

Leave your orphans
I will protect their lives
Your widows too
Can trust in me.
-Jeremiah 49:11

Why is God so concerned about the poor, the orphan and the widow? Why does a person’s social and economic status matter to God? Why doesn’t God favour the strong and industrious in the same way? They are all people. Vulnerability and dependence are the only things that set these groups apart. Yeshua also said that unless we become like little children (vulnerable and dependent) we will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Vulnerable and dependent – that is what God calls us to – that is what God looks for in His people. He seeks our good, to put us on a path to life. He wants us to be restored in full fellowship with Him because our very lives depend on that relationship. Perhaps you haven’t entertained the thought of a relationship with God. Perhaps you think you are strong enough to get through life without depending on God. Perhaps you have everything you need and can’t see the use of God in your comfortable life. Think again. You have settled for less – that emptiness that you still feel in spite of how well you think you are doing is nothing less than the child in you seeking real comfort, protection and guidance. The ‘something’ missing in your life is God. Turn, humble yourself (become vulnerable), and seek God’s best for your life (become dependent).

The Lord is coming!
