God’s Desire

Is it my desire
that a wicked person shall die?
– says the Lord God.
It is rather that he shall turn
back from his ways and live. …
Repent and turn back
From your transgressions;
Let them not be a stumbling block
Of guilt for you.
Cast away all the transgressions
By which you have offended,
And get yourselves a new heart
And a new spirit . . . .
For it is not My desire
That anyone shall die – declares the Lord God.
Repent, therefore, and live!
-Ezekiel 18:23; 30c-31a; 32

Evil is as evil does . . . and there appears to be a lot of evil going on these days. To the left and to the right, whether dressed in rags or riches, evil desire and intention seem to be the rule of the day. Those who practice evil strive to practice more evil, seeking to reap a rich reward for their rapaciousness. Yet, there are those who have turned away evil, and are turning away daily from the lure of their old practices, seeking the true riches promised to them by God. They are seeking daily to practice holiness, that which pleases God not the world – “. . . he has not wronged anyone; he has not seized a pledge or taken anything by robbery; he has given his bread to the hungry and clothed the naked; he has refrained from oppressing the poor, he has not exacted advance or accrued interest; he has obeyed My rules and followed My laws–” (Ezekiel 18:16-17b). They strive to present their whole body as a living sacrifice in service of holiness to the Holy One – they strive to remove the tainted language of evil from their lips; they strive to stop up their ears from listening to the plans of the evil; they strive to avert their eyes from seeing the idols and practices of those who glory in evil. They strive to focus on God and His Righteousness; they strive for His ways and Truth; they strive to serve the poor and the needy; they eagerly look forward to the coming Kingdom of God and the rule of the Messiah. They live and dwell daily in the mercy and compassion of the Holy One – and He will never abandon them for they have trusted in His word and faithfulness.
