Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit
But in humility
Consider others better than yourselves.
Each of you should look not only to your own interests
But also to the interests of others. …
Let your gentleness be evident to all.
The Lord is near.
Do not be anxious about anything
But in everything
By prayer and petition
Present your requests to God.
And the peace of God
Which transcends all understanding
Will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
-Philippians 2:3-4; 4:5-7
Crikey! it’s hard to be a servant. The last thing I want to do is put others before me. Yet, my Lord asks of me the one thing I find the most difficult to do – put others needs before my own. And as for thinking of others as better than me – well, you might as well as ask me to stop breathing! But I’m not really surprised that I think this way given that we live in an age when everyone thinks of themselves first and sod everyone else. Thing is, I really want to grow out of that way of thinking and grow into the mind of Christ. My lack of growth often causes me great anxiety because when I measure myself, I am so found wanting!
The remedy for my anxiety is simple – put my problem before God, and hang onto His promise ‘that He who began a good work in me will bring it to completion through Yeshua’. I have to keep reminding myself that just as I didn’t learn everything taught in school in a day, or even a year, I had to keep going back to learn and reinforce everything being taught.
Everyday, we are to put ourselves before God – everyday, not just when the ‘mood’/‘spirit’ strikes us. One can hardly expect to be humble and place others before themselves if they can’t even humble themselves and put God before all else at the beginning of their day. The ‘peace of God’ comes through ‘presenting our prayers, and petitions with thanksgiving’ to God – everyday, at all times, in everything. We are in the school of service and the only way to grow into a servant is to follow the example of the Master Servant. Turn, exercise discipline, humble yourself before God daily, rise and serve.
The Lord is coming!
