Fear and Wisdom

Lay hold of my words
With all your heart
Keep my commands
And you will live.
Get wisdom, get understanding
Do not forget my words
Or swerve from them.
Do not forsake wisdom
And she will protect you
Love her
And she will watch over you.
Wisdom is supreme
Therefore get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have
Get understanding.
Esteem her
And she will exalt you
Embrace her
And she will honor you.
She will set a garland of grace
On your head
And present you with a crown of splendour.
-Proverbs 4:4-9

Fear is an absence of knowledge – this is more often expressed in the terms of ‘fear of the unknown’. God has told us to ask for wisdom, which He freely gives to all who ask. He does not want fear to dominate our lives. He who knows the unknown gives us the tool by which we can live without fear in spite of not knowing the unknown. All things are in God’s hands, and wisdom’s first task is to let us know that because all things are in God’s hands, and because we serve a living, loving God, we have nothing to fear about the unknown. Turn, ask for wisdom, and cast fear aside.
