No temptation has seized you
Except that which is common to man.
And God is faithful
He will not let you be tempted
Beyond what you can bear.
But when you are tempted
He will also provide a way out
So that you can stand up under it.
-1 Corinthians 10:13
Failure bites! And how often we fail when it comes to temptation. So many are worried about the little things they seem to fail at time and again – can’t lose weight, can’t stop smoking, can’t stop gambling. This passage follows one concerning what is considered some of the most serious issues of temptation: Do not be idolaters …. We should not commit sexual immorality …. We should not test the Lord …. And do not grumble [against those who serve the Lord in places of authority] (1 Corinthians 10:7-10).
“And God is faithful” – are there more beautiful words to read than these? God is faithful – He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. No temptation – let us be clear here, ‘temptation’ is “to set our heart on evil things” (1 Corinthians 10:6b, Jewish New Testament) – we will face will be greater than that which others have faced. Paul is also writing specifically to Corinthians who participate both in the feasts of idolatry and the Lord’s table. He tells the Corinthians to “flee” from idolatry. He makes it quite clear that a person cannot participate in both ways of living. He points out what is wrong, gives the solution – ‘flee’, gives the reason why – do not seek your own good “but the good of many, so that they may be saved”.
Many ask what is the “way out” that God will provide? Many do not read the whole sentence – “so that you can stand up under it”. The ‘way out’ is to trust God and ‘stand up under’ the temptation. Put another way, the ‘way out’ is ‘up’. Turn to God in your temptation and ‘stand’ instead of bowing down and silencing your conscience. The Way has been provided through Yeshua Ha’Mashiach – continue to lay your conscience at His feet and He will raise you up – in season and out of season, in temptation and through temptation, in the land of the living and ‘through the valley of the shadow of death’. Trust God – He is faithful.
The Lord is coming!
